Waterworks club nights will be monthly
From August 2009 Club nights will be held on one Saturday each month, on
- 21 November
- 19 December (Christmas Party)
- 16 January 2010
We intend to return to two club evenings a month from February 2010.
Looking to the future
Running a jazz club is rewarding in many ways but it’s an uphill struggle financially. As an art form, jazz doesn’t attract a mass audience so clubs remain small and friendly. While this creates an intimate ambiance at the Club it doesn’t balance the books.
The club started during the trad jazz ‘boom’ in the 1970’s and has retained a core of members and keen jazz fans since then. For the club to continue for another 39 years we need to attract new audiences: people who’ve never encountered jazz before, people who may have heard recorded jazz music but not experienced the magic of live jazz close up and personal.
We have recently applied for grant funding from various sources:
Awards for all
This lottery grant is for community groups or ‘not for profit’ organisations. We’ve applied for funding for a marketing campaign targeting people in the 40 to 55 age range. As one of the key criteria for this grant is ‘Healthier and more active people and communities’ our application stresses the therapeutic benefits of dance. We’ve requested funding for dance tuition to encourage more people to dance as a sociable way to keep fit.
Dance is an activity that suits all fitness levels, it provides social interaction, self-expression and exercise. Dance can be enjoyed by anyone of any age, shape or size. It’s relaxing and it’s fun. In fact it should be available on the NHS!
We expect to know in 2 – 3 months if our application has been successful.

A special Waterworks tribute to Barry Phillips 'El Presidente'
There was a wonderful turn out for the tribute to Barry Phillips on 1st August with more than 100 people at the club. The dance floor was full all evening with enthusiastic exponents of lindy hop, swing and the quickstep: a fitting tribute to Barry, dancer extraordinaire. It was a joyful and uplifting occasion.
